From C. Hirsch FIGURE 2. Deformation behavior of cartilage under increasing time duration of loading. model allow permanent deformation when the load level in the St. Venant body exceed a characteristic value. This model will display the desired permanent deformation which can be induced in tissue by a combination of excessive load and loading duration. We can now consider some of the clinical investigations which this model suggests. Of fundamental interest is the energy-storage capacity of bony tissue and in particular, the energy-storage capacity of whole bones. Since we would now like to deal with the properties of bone up to and including failure, it will be necessary to investigate some failure criteria. Since bone is nonhomogenous and anisotropic, a rigorous three dimensional criteria would be most difficult to obtain, and will not be attempted here. A simplified criteria, based simply on the one dimensional case will be used. McElhaney and Byars
