We investigated vibrations excited by a lateral electrical field in a LiNbO3 crystal plate with a ferroelectric inversion layer. It is shown that the electrical admittance of the plate exhibits a series of resonances which are identified to be associated with thickness-shear modes of the plate. The resonance characteristics and the disp-lacement distributions near resonances are found to be sensitive to the relative thickness of the inversion layer and the related mechanisms are discussed. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve dual-frequency mode bulk acoustic wave sensors using lateral-field-excited LiNbO3 plates with a ferroelectric inversion layer.
