Sumrnary: From 1983 through 1989, 726 patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) of 1 to 5 years’ duration and with no sign of diabetic retinopathy were enrolled into the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial. The patients were between 13 and 39 years old; 18% were between 13 and 18 years old. The patients were randomized into either a conventional treatment group or an intensive treatment group. Conventionally treated patients took one or two injections of mixed regularand intermediate-acting insulin daily. Intensively treated patients took at least three injections of insulin daily or used an insulin pump. Intensively treated patients also checked their blood glucose at least four times daily. Each insulin dose could then be adjusted, based on the blood glucose level and the anticipated dietary intake and exercise. The goal of intensive therapy
