Reviews recent findings of evoked electrical activity in alcoholics and healthy elderly individuals. The review is subdivided according to the evoked potential techniques used to assess brain functioning: brain-stem potential, pattern-evoked potential, and event-related potential. Because each of these techniques provides different information about the level of brain functioning, the resultant neurophysiological profiles of alcoholics and the elderly can be compared for underlying pathophysiology. The electrophysiological data from previous studies suggest possible different underlying pathophysiology for alcoholism and aging, casting doubt on the credibility of the" accelerated aging" hypothesis in alcoholism.(131 ref)(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
