This paper summarizes the knowledge of Serpula (Aphyllophorales, Basidiomycota) from China, and three species in the genus are recorded from the country. An identification key, including statistical variations of spore dimensions of each species, is supplied. Serpula similis is newly recorded in China, and an illustrated description of the species is given according to the Chinese material. The species is characterized by its pileate basidiocarps, subglobose basidiospores, and by growth on bamboo. Serpula lacrymans often causes problems on wooden houses in Europe, but it is less destructive in China.
