METHODSMongrel dogs weighing I 2-25 kg were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium (30 mg/kg) and transthoracic thoracotomy was performed during positive pressure ventilation. The sinoatrial node was crushed and heart rate varied by electrical stimulation of the atria1 appendage. Atria1 and ventricular force were monitored using Walton-Brodie strain-gauge arches sewn to the wall of the respective chamber. An I~-mm arch was used on the atrium and a 23-mm arch with adjustable feet used on the ventricle.
