bXiLUolVb eruptions from Alaska's more than 40 active volcanoes pose a significant threat to aircraft, communities, and commerce in the north Pacific. Because of this threat, the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) was established in 1988 to monitor dangerous volcanoes, issue eruption alerts, assess volcanic ha/ards, and conduct volcano research in Alaska. Advance warnings and tracking of the 1989-90 eruptions of Redoubt, the 1992 eruptions of Spun-, and the 1996 eruption of Pavlof contributed to public safety and minimized the economic impact of these events.
