MATERIALS AND METHODSWe performed surgery and osmotic agent testing on male albino rabbits weighing 3.5 to 4.5 kg to test our proposed hypothesis. Operative procedure—A midline scalp in cision was made with the subjects under in travenous sodium pentobarbital anesthesia. Incision of the periosteum exposed the junc tion of the sagittal and coronal skull sutures. A 1.5-mm burr hole was made midline, 1 mm anterior to the coronal suture, and two stain less steel screws were fixed to the skull. We inserted a 22-gauge stainless steel cannula with a physiological seal (David Kopf Instru ments) stereotaxically to a depth of 14.5 to 15.5 mm. e Pressure in the rabbits' ventricular system measured—4 cm H2 0.
