The existence of non-randomness in natural vegetation is reviewed and the methods of detection outlined. The causal factors underlying such patterns are discussed in relation to several illustrative examples. Three pattern types are proposed morphological, sociological, and environmental. The relationship between the stability of vegetation and the degree of non-randomness present is discussed.
