ABSTRACT This study examined the possibility of using the acceleration history of a fruit during impact to predict the degree of fruit damage. Results of impact tests with 240 'Golden Delicious' apples indicate that when the fruits were dropped from different heights onto different impacting surfaces (cushioned differently), the bruise volume could be predicted by multiple regression models based on a) the parameters derived solely from the acceleration and impacting mass data (R2=0.862) and b) Fourier-transform coefficients of the impact acceleration curves (R2=0.883).
