In this textbook, the basic concepts of economic theory and how it can be applied to transport economics is outlined. The author does not assume prior knowledge of economics. There are 17 chapters: (1) the economist's approach; (2) the demand for transport; (3) the supply of transport; (4) forecasting the use of the transport system; (5) the structure of transport costs; (6) the General Transport Cost Model; (7) pricing for profit; (8) Government control of prices; (9) competitive approach or planned approach to transport; (10) financial and economic evaluation - the basic methodology; (11) key questions about economic evaluation; (12) a worked example of economic evaluation; (13) economic evaluation : the technique; (14) the new approach to appraisal; (15) project finance; (16) the importance of transport in the economy; and (17) guidelines for transport policy. There are three appendices: (a) 4 examples of project appraisal - railway modernisation, the Channel Tunnel, bridge and road maintenance; (b) identification of the least cost mode for urban public transport; and (c) calculation of user benefits, derivation of the general formula. Includes a glossary of transport economics terms.
