Sir, In his letter relating to our article entitled ‘Another look at human sperm morphology’(Auger et al., 2016). Dr Bronson (Bronson, 2016) raises several important points regarding the diagnostic and prognostic interest of a detailed morphological assessment of human spermatozoa, which we are very happy to address. Contrary to the first assertion of Dr Bronson, we have devoted some space in the Introduction and Discussion of our article to develop the various environmental and genetic context that may lead to an abnormal sperm morphogenesis, a point which is a major working basis of our study. After briefly considering the central role of sperm morphology as a possible proxy of a causal pathology (eg an environmental exposure or a genetic defect, as summarized in our manuscript) Dr Bronson first discusses the poor functional value of sperm morphology assessment. For that, he took the example of the statistically significant association between sperm head morphological abnormalities and impaired gamete interaction in IVF in comparison to situations of a high incidence of morphological abnormalities associated with a normal oocyte penetration rate. The fact that traditional semen parameters are not strong indicators of fertilizing ability at the individual level is well known and backed up by an ever growing number of published studies. Thus, we agree with Dr Bronson that our approach does not replace functional tests (acrosome reaction, sperm zona-binding, sperm DNA damage, etc.). These functional tests may be very useful when used in a second step for specific clinical situations. We also fully agree that the morphology analysis, either by WHO5 (World Health Organization, 2010) focusing on typical sperm or the approach used in our study, have limited prognostic value. However, contrary to the title of Dr Bronson’s letter (‘Reliability of sperm morphology in predicting function’), the major topic of our study was not the prognostic or functional value of assessing sperm morphology; rather our article focuses on the interest of a standardized analysis of human sperm morphological defects as a basis for better understanding the possible
