The accurate measurement of intraocular pressure (IOP) is a cornerstone of the diagnosis and management of glaucoma. This article reviews various methods of IOP measurement, summarizes the basic principles involved and the advantages and disadvantages of each technique, and discusses factors, focusing on corneal parameters, that can potentially influence measurement accuracy. Physical, physiologic, and pathologic factors that can affect IOP are discussed, and a methodology for correcting IOP measurements for confounding factors in a clinical setting is proposed.
