The use of microorganisms and microbial activities to recover base metals from wastes has been a maturing technology since the 1970s, and is well represented by the International Biohydrometallurgy Symposia, formally published in book form and in special journal issues. The Symposia publications provide primary resources to document this technology development and applications that will not be reiterated here.
