Thespider genus Liocranoides Keyserling isrelimited toinclude onlya smallgroup of Appalachian spiders, anditssuggested (albeit surprising) placement inthefamily Tengellidae istentatively accepted. Theclosest relatives ofthegenus appear tobefromCalifornia and adjacent areas(Titiotus Simon,AnachemmisChamberlin, andan apparently undescribed genus)butprevious hypotheses thatsome or allofthosewesterntaxashouldbeplacedin Liocranoides arerejected. Because thetypespecies ofLiocranoides was basedon ajuvenile fromMammothCave,Kentucky, andno adults seem subsequently tohavebeencollected from that area, theidentity ofL.unicolor remains uncertain. Ithasseemedbesttouse that name forthegeographically closest species, so adult males(thefirst described forthegenus)and females ofa species knownonlyfromcaves innorth-central Tennessee are assigned toL. unicolor, andfournew species aredescribed: L.tennesseensis fromcentral andeasternTennessee,L coylei fromsouthwestern Virginia, westernNorthCarolina, andeastern Tennessee, L.archeri fromsouth-central Tennessee andnortheastern Alabama, andL.gertschi fromnorthern Alabamaandnorthwestern Georgia. Allfivespecies havebeentakenincaves, andtwo (L.unicolor andL.archeri) are so farknownonlyfromthathabitat.
