Performances of old and young adults were compared in a free recall task to test the frequently quoted hypothesis that age differences in immediate memory are limited to the secondary or long-term component. In contrast to predictions from this selective deficit hypothesis, age differences were found in both primary memory and secondary memory, as reflected by serial position analyses and other measures of these stores.
