Chlamydial infection, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis are the most common nonviral sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the United States. Prevalence and incidence estimates are derived from several sources, including reported cases, clinic-based estimates, and community-based estimates. The combination of nucleic acid amplification tests and survey sampling techniques have led to the availability of true population-based estimates of the prevalence of these infections. This article reviews the estimates of prevalence and incidence, excluding purely clinic-based estimates, for these STIs. The strengths and limitations of each type of estimate also are discussed.
