Examines physiological mechanisms related to behavior in lower organisms. Selection of motor reflexes of the Paramecium on contact with obstructions are discussed in this context. It shows a galvano-tropic response when stimulated by galvanic current, which may not be explained by Darwin's theory of selection. In the case of the Euglena, when exposed to lights from 2 sources, the direction of locomotion is adjusted to their intensity as well as position. It has been observed that the reactions to these 2 intensities of light are governed by 2 distinct mechanisms. Imagoes of Drosophila show positive phototropism. Tropisms, thus, show that the organisms possess fundamental characteristics in common with the non-directive reactions. The relationship of these superficially different kinds of reflexes is found in the physiological processes they represent. These processes are also present in the phenomena of growth.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
