To define the prevalence, frequency and characteristics of premature ventricular complexes (PVC) in adults free of recognizable heart disease 24 h ambulatory ECG was performed on 101 subjects (51 men and 50 women, mean age 48.8 yr) in whom physical examination, chest X-ray, ECG, echocardiogram, maximal exercise stress test, right- and left-heart catheterization and coronary arteriography were normal. Subjects (39) had at least 1 PVC/24 h, but 4 had > 100 PVC/24 h and fewer than 5 had > 5 PVC in any given hour. The probability of having at least 1 PVC/24 h increased with age (.chi.2 = 11.789, P = 0.019). The number of PVC/24 h was positively associated with age (r = 0.33, P = 0.001). There was no consistent relationship between the presence or number of PVC/24 h and sex, blood pressure, weight, height, body mass index, serum K or Ca, cholesterol and triglyceride, Hb, the ingestion of coffee, tea or alcohol and cigarette smoking. Four subjects had multiform PVC 2 of whom had early PVC.
