The obsessive-compulsive activity checklist is a brief self- or observer-rated instrument to measure the interference of obsessive-compulsive behavior in everyday life. To date, this instrument, which if frequently used by behavior therapists, has not been validated. A validation study of French version is presented. Four groups were compared-obsessive-compulsive patients (n = 45), agoraphobics with panic attacks (n = 46), social phobics (n = 34), and controls (n = 55). The groups were balanced for factors of age, sex, and education. The checklist appears empirically valid, sensitive to clinical change, but only moderately reliable. Internal consistency reliability appears satisfactory. A principal components analysis suggests that the scale is unidimensional. The homogeneity of the checklist could be improved by suppressing the items related to phobias, and also items weakly correlated with the first principal component. An abbreviated form is proposed.
