Straightening operations are often necessary to countermand distortions and deformations caused by heat treatment. The experience shows that regarding the commercial practice of straightening a lack of knowledge of the systematic dependence between material properties and possible straightening operations is obvious. Defined straightening requires an exact knowledge of the material properties over the cross section of the components. For the direct investigation of straightening processes deformations were regarded, which occur in components by a through heat treatment. Different materials, heat treatments and sample geometries were showing different residual stress states and different failure behavior concerning the straightening operations.
