Illustrates how quantitative and qualitative models can be complementary and synergistic in research on families, specifically, in exploring the effects of the social environment on health and illness. In one study, family-practice patients at high psychosocial risk (by virtue of stressful life changes and weak social supports) did or did not receive individual and group educational sessions with nurse practitioners. The experimental group had a lower rate of restricted-activity days than did controls. A spin-off study of high-psychosocial-risk women is described, and several cases from this study are presented in detail and with genograms. The strengths and weaknesses of quantitative and qualitative models are discussed.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)
