ABSTRACT A maximum of 1,000 m of Triassic rock exposed in the Central High Atlas Mountains of Morocco consists of mudstone, siltstone, sandstone, and conglomerate red beds containing intercalated basalt flows in the upper part of the stratigraphic section. The thickest accumulation of sediment was in northeasterly trending elongate basins, in which the principal direction of sediment transport was northeastward along the axes. Compositional data indicate that the Triassic red beds are mostly multi-cycle sediments, derived from local sources, and composed largely of detritus reworked from lower Paleozoic strata exposed in the nearby uplands. The sediment was deposited in a nonmarine environment by alluvial processes. Lacustrine and playa conditions were locally present. This nonmarine depositio ended when marine waters transgressed into the basins during Liassic time.
