During electrorefining, impurities, notably Fe, are found to concentrate in the layer of electrolyte next to the cathode. The layer of electrolyte affected is about 100 mu thick, and the Fe concentration increases by a factor of about 100, from the external part of the layer to the surface of the cathode (i.e., the surface of the dendrites of refined U). The results are shown to have some relevance to knowledge of the general mechanism of electrorefining. Thus one can explain, for example, why the purity of the refined U depends, as often observed, on the quantity of residual electrolyte occluded in the dendrites after the final washing used to eliminate salts.
