This study aims to compare the operating efficiency between a large forage harvester system (large machine system) and a compact general-purpose harvest machinery system (small machine system) and consider which systems were chosen by contractors under which conditions. The main outcomes are as follows. According to the analysis of GPS logger data, large forage harvesters have a leg up on the compact general-purpose harvesters in operating efficiency under any field scale. When the total operating exceeds 80ha, the cost of harvesting per 10a with a large machine system is lower than that of a small one.
