Discusses 9 reports and 1 paper on the efficacy of fenfluramine in children and young adults diagnosed as being autistic, including 2 reports that deal with the untoward side effects of the drug. It is noted that positive results have been attained in some studies (eg, reduced hyperactivity, more appropriate behaviors, language and speech improvements) but that anorexia, drowsiness, movement disorders, teeth grinding, and seizures have also been observed with fenfluramine use.
