Peroxides from the most active to the most stable can be quantitatively determined by means of a coherent group of three methods. Method I (refluxing Nal-isopropyl alcohol) is recommended for alleasily reduced peroxides. Method II (refluxing Nal-acetic acid-6% H20) is primarily an assay procedure for diaralkyl peroxides, such as dicumyl peroxide. Method III (refluxing Nal-acetic acid-HCI) will determine the most stable di-ferf-alkyl peroxides and quanti-tatively reduce many nonperoxidic compounds. Several interim pro-cedures are discussed. The impor-tance of excess iodide and the key role of H20 content in the regulation of reducing power are stressed. The scope of the methods is demonstrated by their application to the determina-tion of many pure compounds. Rela-tive standard deviations were 0.23% for Method I, 0.30% for Method II, and 0.32% for Method III.
