Compared alcohol consumption and casualties in probability samples of 2 diverse emergency room populations (aged 18+ yrs): 2,516 cases at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) and 3,609 cases at 4 hospitals representative of a nearby California county. Injuries were found to be positively associated with breathalyzer readings, self-reported consumption prior to the event, and more frequent heavy drinking in both samples. In the county sample injuries were also positively associated with more frequent drunkenness, symptoms of alcohol dependence and loss of control, and prior alcohol-related accidents. The SFGH Ss had higher rates than the county Ss on all alcohol variables, and both samples reported higher rates of alcohol-related problems than that found in US general population surveys.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
