The exhibition Faith in Suburbia: A Shared Photography Journey was held at South Cloisters, University College London from December 7, 2012 to January 31, 2013, and then at Gunnersbury Park Museum, London from February 16 to June 30, 2013. The exhibition showcased the outcome of an innovative collaborative photography project with senior citizens from six different local faith communities. The participants, from Our Lady and St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Thomas’s Church, West London Islamic Centre, London Sikh Centre, Ealing Liberal Synagogue, and Shri Kanaga Thurkkai Amman Hindu Temple joined Dr. Claire Dwyer, a geographer from University College London (UCL), and photographer Liz Hingley in a project documenting each others’ places of worship. The participants had no prior experience of photography and most had never visited other places of worship in their neighborhood. Working under the guidance of Liz Hingley, whose award-winning work Under Gods: Stories from Soho Road (2011) explores the juxtaposition of diverse faith communities, they used photographs to explore the different religious buildings and collaborated in the selection of images for six faith “banners” for display. Photography was an effective medium for the participants to encounter different religious spaces. As Hingley explained in an interview after the project:
