Body composition measurements show that lean body mass (LBM) is related to the logarithm of body fat over a wide range of body weights in women and adolescent girls. From this relation it was predicted that an induced change in fat content would, generally speaking, be accompanied by a change in LBM, the magnitude of the change in LBM being inversely related to the initial body fat content. Studies of subjects who have experienced diet-induced changes in weight show that such changes do involve a large proportion of LBM in thin persons and a large proportion of fat in those who have larger amounts of body fat. An additional factor is energy intake, for the relative contribution of LBM to the total weight loss is inversely related to energy intake.
