A basic summary of knowledge concerningE. coli(VTEC) serotype O157 is given. Subjects discussed include the history of its discovery and major worldwide outbreaks, the symptoms of infection and course of illness, laboratory diagnosis, pathogenesis and epidemiology. The account is concluded with a discussion of the Pennington report, concerning recommendations following theE. colioutbreak in Lanarkshire, Scotland, when over 400 people were infected and 18 elderly patients died. The recommendations include improvements in surveillance of the VTEC O157 organism, enforcement of food safety measures and improved management of future outbreaks.
