A continuation of the studies on the use of sub-stituted acetic acids for the biosynthesis of peni-cillins has led to the preparation and testing of a large series of oxy-and mercaptoacetic acids of the types ROCH2COOH and RSCH2COOH and cer-tain of their derivatives. The methods oftest-ing3· 4 and the isolation and characterization of some of the resulting penicillins6 have been covered previously.
