Drawing upon perceived organizational support (POS) theory, this study examines the influence of the number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) prevention measures adopted by an organization on employees’ POS and work behaviors. We also consider the role of COVID-19 outbreak size in moderating such effects by pitting two theoretical views against one another. A discretion view suggests that when a COVID-19 outbreak is large, employees are likely to perceive a lack of discretion in their organization’s provision of prevention measures; therefore, offering more prevention measures will have a limited impact on employee POS and behaviors. In contrast, a supply-needs view suggests that employees’ need for protection increases as the size of the COVID-19 outbreak increases; therefore, organizations meet such needs by offering more prevention measures to employees to enhance their POS and work behaviors. By studying a sample of working adults in the United States (N= 320), we found that the number of prevention measures adopted by an organization positively influenced employees’ POS and, indirectly, work behaviors. In addition, we found an interaction effect to support the supply-needs view. Our findings provide insight and guidance to practitioners to allow the more effective adoption of COVID-19 prevention measures to support and manage employees.
