Sir, In our preliminary report [1], we had noticed im provement in 3 cases of human papillomavirus type 3 (HPV3)-induced epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) and in 1case of double infection with HPV3 and a potientially oncogenic HPV8. We did not apply etretinate in EV cases induced exclusively by EV-specific HPVs, although clinical improvement was also reported in EV patients infected with potentially onco genic HPVS (2, 3]. The follow-up showed, however, that the beneficial effect of etretinate on benign warty lesions was temporary [4].Kowalzick and Mensing [5], report only little clini cal improvement after 6 months of etretinate therapy in a patient with HPV5-induced EV. We agree with the authors that EV induced by EV-specific viruses, speci fically by potentially oncogenic HPVs, is not an indica tion for this therapy.
