Using Greek census data and applying IV-estimation techniques [Angrist, J., and Evans, W., 1998, Children and their parents' labor supply: evidence from exogenous variation in family size, American Economic Review, 88(3) 450-577.]. we investigate whether the sex composition of children identifies the causal effect of fertility on maternal employment. Sibling-sex composition appears to be a rather weak instrument in Greece, a low-fertility/low-employment country. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
