Visual pigments in the chicken and pigeon isolated retina were determined with 2 independent methods using selective bleaching and recording of the early receptor potential (ERP). Both the bleaching kinetics and ERP spectral sensitivity curves showed the presence of at least 4 visual pigments having absorption maxima near 413, 467, 507 and 562 nm. Evidence was presented that P467 and P413 were real visual pigments and not the photoproducts formed during the decay of rhodopsin or iodopsin. Some fraction of rhodopsin-507 was probably enclosed within the cones. The ocular media in chicken and pigeon were transparent down to 340 nm and did not disturb the function of the violet-sensitive pigment. Color vision in birds, as in other vertebrates, exploits the multi-pigment cone system.
