Brugia pahangi, a naturally occurring parasite of some forest animals and of domestic dogs and cats, is frequent in areas where B. malayi is endemic. Direct inoculation of B. pahangi has been succesful in infecting cats, slow loris and civet cats. Laboratory raised mosquitoes (Mansonia annulatus, M. uniformis, M. longipalpis, M. crassipes, Anopheles barbirostris, A. umbrosus, Armigeres obturans, Aedes aegypti and Culex fatigans), especially Armigeres obturans, serve as successful vectors of B. pahangi Mansonia longipalpis and M. annulatus are known vectors in the field. The microfilariae of B. pahangi are morphologically very similar to those of B. malayi in appearance, but can readily be separated on the basis of habitats. B. pahangi seldom can successfully infect any primate, and usually the mosquito vector is one that does not readily carry B. malayi. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: A. C. Walton
