I hope it is clear from the above discussion that we are a long way from developing an alternative preventive therapy for emphysema in inhibitor-sufficient individuals that is as effective as smoking cessation. Further work such as discussed above, however, is likely both to improve our understanding of the human disease and to guide us in developing effective interventions.
