This paper explores the integration of a heat store (HeS) with a heat exchanger (HX) into a single unit that performs both functions (HeSX). The concept is intended for compressed air energy storage systems (CAES), but it is compatible with other thermo-mechanical energy storage systems (e.g. pumped heat). The motivation is to reduce the overall cost of CAES systems. An HeSX unit can be directly charged by the stream of compressed air, eliminating the auxiliary ambient-pressure air circuit. Sea salt is considered as the heat storage material due to its high heat capacity, relatively good thermal conductivity, and its ability to accommodate the thermal expansion of steel pipes without losing a good thermal contact. We use an offshore-wind-driven CAES system (15 MW, 180 MWh) as a case study. There are not many commercial CAES systems in operation, but typically the levelized cost of a CAES system's heat storage subsystem (packed bed thermal store, heat exchangers and secondary ambient pressure circuit) is in the range of 45 to 48 £/MWh.The most cost-effective HeSX design found here achieves a much lower levelized cost of ~31.5 £/MWh with a capital cost of ~£55k. This unit achieves an overall roundtrip exergy efficiency (pressure and heat) of 93.7 %, although losses to the environment are not considered. The HeSX unit offers a significant cost reduction and simplifies the overall architecture.
