The modulation of voltage-dependent Ca currents is a powerful mechanism for the regulation of neuronal activity. Several neurotransmitters have now been shown to have this capability. GABA, noradrenalin, and serotonin inhibit neuronal Ca conductances in the dorsal root ganglion [1]. Noradrenalin also inhibits Ca currents in the postganglionic neurons of the rat superior cervical ganglion [2]. Although it is not clear that adenosine qualifies as a neurotransmitter, we have now shown that adenosine inhibits voltagedependent Ca currents by activation of adenosine receptors on the somata of these postganglionic neurons [3].
