Unexpected findings of Hill et al.(1984), in which the induced transformation frequency of OTI/2 cells at low dose and low dose rate of fission-spectrum neutrons is much larger per unit dose than at high dose rate, have excited much interest and even some scepticism (Barendsen 1985). That the dose-response relation appears to be effectively linear:(a) over the dose range 0 to 10 cGy at low dose rate; and (b) from 0 to 40cGy at high dose rate, heightens the paradox (Barendsen 1985, Elkind and Hill 1985).The overall form of the two dose-response relations reminded us of the characteristics of two equations we had already investigated (Burch and Chesters 1979), one deriving from Haynes's (1966) repair model for the survival of irradiated bacteria and the other from our purely speculative model of radiation-induced repair. We consider here the possible relevance of these two models and a third, more general version combining the features of both, to the data of Hill et al.(1984).
