Certain secretory cells in the pars distalis of the mouse hypophysis are ciliated. Each pituitary cilium is associated with a basal body and a proximal centriole and possesses a 9 + 0 fibril pattern. From a review of the literature on cilia and flagella it emerges that pituitary cilia are dissimilar in structure to typical cilia with a motile function, and have structural analogies with cilia presumed to be performing a sensory function.
