worthy of professional consideration, such as the tension-release technique. Chapter 3 moves on to examine attachment, offering a very useful examination of how adult caregivers and professionals may respond to children’s behaviour by identifying a possible explanation for their behaviour, what this might tell us about their underlying needs and potential positive responses from the adult. A further table giving a range of responses to guide the reader in verbalising understandings is also highly useful, both for the parent and the practitioner. Chapter 4 covers the idea that a key aspect of emotional resilience is the child’s expectation that they can rely on their needs being addressed in a predictable manner. This appears to fit in with attachment theory, rather than being a separate issue entitled environmental influences. The use of Harlow’s work with Rhesus monkey infants here also seems to support the importance of a secure attachment, with warmth and nurturing as key facets of this. Overall the book is easy to read and informative for parents and professionals alike. At times, the personal narrative style can be a little irksome, but overall the work achieves its aims of acting as a short introduction to the topic in hand.
