The compatibility of in-line optical regeneration with dispersion-managed wavelength division multiplexed soliton transmission is demonstrated, through the use of a new ‘black-box’ regenerator scheme. The possibility of achieving 4 × 40 Gbit/s transmission over 15 Mm, compared to 2 Mm without regeneration, is demonstrated numerically.
