The first part of the text describes the techniques for monitoring turbulent flow using classical devices such as hot-film probes, electromagnetic current meters, laser velocimetry and ultrasonic sensors. Since the turbulence generated on sand waves usually shows organized structures, it is desirable to apply other modern techniques such as the particle image velocimetry (PIV) associated with correlation methods to obtain instantaneous three-dimensional velocity fields. For example, the hairpin vortices illustrated in the book may be visualized more realistically, if an application visualization system (AVS) is used in tandem with the above-mentioned PIV method. Acoustic and electromagnetic detection systems for the measurement of sediment transport are illustrated in the book which have not been described in the existing classical textbooks on sediment transport. The systems seem promising for observing the fluctuation of sediment mass flux associated with flow turbulence.
