Chinese black ink widely in use in Japan from ancient time is obtained by rubbing a piece of dry water-colour called "sumi " upon the surface of a stone vessel called " suzuri," the surface being from time to time wetted with water drawn from a pool contained in the depressed part of the vessel. The dry colour is manufactured with lampblack obtained by burning some oil or tips of pine-wood, mixed with some gelatinous matter. The ink of sumi is a kind of colloidal suspension as many other water-colours of which the stability of suspension is protected by means of gelatinous matter. The present experimental study was begun with the purpose of elucidating the phenomenon called " sumi-nagasi " which is similar to that known in Europe as " Marmor-technik "1) among book-binders. Varigated patterns of the colour film spread upon water surface are printed upon paper, silk, etc. for its characteristic decorative effects. The results of experiments made in connection with this study may be of some interest for colloid chemists and also for the physicists dealing with the problem regarding surface film. A brief summary of the results will therefore be given below. For the details the readers are referred to the report to be published in the Scientific Paper of the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research.
