In the l0 years since the identification of HIV-l-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) in infected persons, this cellular immune response has been investigated in more depth than in any other human viral infection. Despite substantial advances in understanding many features of this arm of the host defense, fundamental issues regarding the role of CTL in protecting from disease progression remain undefined, and the failure of CTL to effectively compete with the virus over the course of infection is unexplained. Recent advances from numerous laboratories are now beginning to shed light on these issues, and form the basis for the generation of new hypotheses.
