Comments on an article by Rafael Romero-Garcia et al.(see record 2020-08234-001). Romero-Garcia et al. quantify the relationship between regional cortical MT and both the degree of schizotypal behavior in individual subjects and the cortical expression of genes from the Allen Human Brain Atlas. Though the individuals with schizotypy in this study do not meet the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia (SZ) or other psychosis spectrum disorders, they display attenuated psychosis spectrum disorder–relevant symptoms. The authors hypothesize that the behavioral traits of schizotypy may be linked with regional changes in structural neural features such as myelination, which they measure using MT, as well as SZ-related dysregulation of genes in the cortex. The novel methodology used by Romero-Garcia et al. highlights another key difficulty with comparing transcriptomic and neural data. Another key aspect of this article relates to its crossdiagnostic implications. Previous work has reported that disease-related gene sets, including for SZ, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and major depressive disorder, are significantly enriched for genes with a strong hierarchical gradient. By combining several complementary methodologies and datasets, Romero-Garcia et al. demonstrated how transcriptomic data can be used to inform the mechanisms underlying disease-relevant behavior.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)
