During a three-week cruise to the Celtic Sea in late spring, the photosynthesis characteristics of the phytoplankton were followed at a single, nominal station. Observations were made on size–fractionated samples as well as on whole samples. The properties of the small ( 1 μm fraction) differed with respect to the parameters aB (initial slope) and PBm (assimilation number) of the photosynthesis-light curve and to the dependence of these parameters on environmental covariables. These differences account for some of the difficulty in explaining fluctuations in properties of unfractionated samples. Optical analysis leads to a method for estimation of photic depth, with high confidence, for days on which underwater irradiance measurements were not available. The shape of the vertical profile of photosynthetic pigments changed in a systematic way throughout the cruise. The implications for calculation of water-column primary production are discussed. In the Celtic Sea, during late spring, use of a non-spectral model assuming uniform water column for computation of primary production will lead to differences of up to 20% compared with the results of a fully spectral model that admits vertical stratification.
