Callystatin A (1) has been isolated from the marine sponge, Callyspongia truncata, and the plane structure, including parts of the absolute configurations, is elucidated. Callystatin A (1) is a novel polyketide with a terminal alpha,beta-unsaturated delta-lactone and exhibited potent cytotoxicity against KB cells at IC50 0.01 ng/ml. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
